bbteamsThe gymnasium at Parkside Elementary School in Peru was PACKED on Friday, March 5! Fans of three local Rotary Clubs-Peru, Illinois Valley Sunrise and LaSalle and the "rival" Doctors from Illinois Valley Community  Hospital filled every seat in the gym to cheer on their teams in a charity basketball game.  Fan donations totaled just under $1800 and were split between The Illinois Valley Food Pantry and the Illinois Valley Community Hospital Foundation.
The game was coordinated by Peru Rotarians Simon Kampwerth, Mark Cross, Superintendent of Peru Schools, and Mark Batty and Gene Vogelgesang, who both work at IVCH.
The teams practiced in the evening several times to prepare for the game, which was very entertaining to all who attended.  At the end of the night, the IVCH Doctor's were victorious, but the real winners were the charities, and everyone who came out to enjoy the game.

IVCH – Rotary Basketball: Fun with a Purpose

It started with a few IVCH physicians getting together to play basketball at the Illinois Valley YMCA.  After a time, they wanted to play against someone other than themselves.  Three local Rotary clubs accepted the challenge and the 1st Annual Rotary vs. IVCH Basketball Classic was born.

The game was played Friday night, March 5, in the gym at Peru’s new Parkside School.  No admission was charged but donations were accepted and $1,682 was collected and divided evenly between the Illinois Valley Food Pantry and the IVCH Foundation.  So, the evening was a success even before the opening tipoff.  When the game began, observers noticed two things: 1) the contest was surprisingly intense; and 2) the quality of the basketball being played wasn’t bad.

The final score: IVCH 47, Rotary 44.  And everyone was talking about a 2011 rematch as the teams left the gym
