genetommyIVCC Athletic Director, Tommy Canale, spoke to Peru Rotary about the philosophy of his programs and the opportunities available to IVCC athletes.  Tommy is also the Head Coach or the Men's Basketball Team.
At IVCC athletics is just as important as any aspect of the curriculum.  We strongly feel that athletic competition does many things to prepare an individual for their life ahead.  One intangible is that athletics teaches a player to discipline themselves; second, athletics develops a positive winning attitude; and third, athletics stimulates teamwork and cooperation.  These values are learned not only by the athletes, but also by the managers, student body and community.  Our players must know how to conduct themselves on and off the floor.  We honestly believe the word "extra-curricular" is a misnomer - athletics is indeed a very important part of the curriculum.
A number of the athletes at IVCC possess the talent to compete at a higher level and earn scholarships for education.  They receive a great deal of exposure at games,  tournaments and events.  Many of them will go on to other colleges and universities and achieve success academically and atheltically.  Tommy emphasized that the primary focus is on academic achievement.  Only after those goals are attained is it time to have fun and compete in athletics.
Tommy ended his presentation with a thank you for Peru Rotary volunteers to help run the Regional Tournament last season and an invitation to participate again this coming February.  He also commented that he would be "shocked" if the Women's Basketball team does not with the tournament and compete at the national tournament.
